One of the most powerful people in the MCU is just an ordinary person: Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, or Val, as her friends say to save time. Valentina appeared a lot in Phase 4, never as a central character but just in small cameos, slowly working behind the scenes to accomplish something that almost everyone knows can’t be good. She has already recruited the American agent and Yelena Belova. And in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, we find out she’s been promoted from sneaky thug for Wilson Fisk to CIA director. Whatever she does, it can’t be good.
Fontaine’s Valentina Allegra appears to be the evil version of Nick Fury. He’s a kind of pseudo-government agent whose motives may not be entirely clear, but the priorities are always certain: to accumulate as much power and control as humanly possible. For now, she seems determined to secure US military supremacy through control of vibranium. But between now and the next Marvel movie, his focus might change. You can never tell which direction these types of spies are going.
One thing is certain: it’s frightening to see how much power and influence Val has grown in such a short time, and it looks like she plans to keep gaining more. In the comics, she is completely dangerous. So, let’s explore Madame Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
The MCU Serpent
If there’s anything certain about Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, it’s that she’s untrustworthy. She has made it clear on several occasions that she will do whatever she can to achieve her goals and that her moral compass might be a little less solid than others. In Wakanda Forever, Agent Everett Ross confronted her about what she could do with the same vibranium resources the Wakandans had, as if to tell her that it was right that the United States didn’t have vibranium weapons. Agent Ross said we were going to create all kinds of weapons of mass destruction. Val replied, almost salivating, that she dreams of doing something like this every night.
The director of Fontaine, as she’s now known in the MCU, first appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier primarily to sink her claws into US Agent. There, she was just a CIA agent or operating under some kind of vague government authority. In the Black Widow post-credits scene, there she was, hiring Black Widow Yelena Belova, most assume to go after Hawkeye in her upcoming Disney+ series. They’re already two members of the infamous Thunderbolts anti-hero team, set to appear in their eponymous film in 2024, or possibly before that in Captain America: New World Order.
Right now, it looks like the Director of Fontaine is moving in that direction to assemble and control the Thunderbolts. Where most thought it would be General Thunderbolt Ross leading them or their original comic book mastermind Baron Zemo, the MCU seems to be making it more and more likely that Fontaine’s Valentina Allegra will be the one to assemble the team. Of course, she could always work for someone else. It is his MO to act on behalf of a greater authority.
The MCU seems to surround her with a vaguely evil air, despite her working for the United States or possibly SHEILD. At the moment, she seems to be on the good side, but she’s slowly getting meaner, if she hasn’t been all along.
Who does Val really work for?
Valentina Allegra de Fontaine is, of course, the Director of the CIA in the MCU, but comic book fans will know she’s much more than that. His reputation in comics is long and sordid. She worked a very long time for SHIELD as a field agent. She got the job by beating Nick Fury in hand-to-hand combat. Once she was an Agent of SHIELD, she had a dramatic time working there. She flirted with Nick Fury and Captain America, which led to all sorts of terrible high school-like shenanigans with world-class consequences.
But Val hasn’t always worked for SHIELD; she never worked for them. Yes, at one point she turned out to be a Skrull, but even the real Val had lied. Who she really was and where she came from is one of the most dangerous underground organizations in the Marvel Universe. Val even infiltrated Hydra in an effort to control them who she worked for. It’s true, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, before anyone else on the planet, works for Leviathan.
Leviathan is a dangerous underground and advanced scientific spy agency that was established in Soviet times. It now exists as a secret organization that continually tries to take over the world. When Val’s parents were killed as a child, she was adopted by the agency and raised as a spy. She’s been a deep cover agent ever since. In the MCU, we can all say she’s evil, but it’s only a matter of time before they reveal how evil they are.
Leviathan is one of the most dangerous organizations in the Marvel Universe, and it hasn’t even been shown in the MCU yet. The closest look we got was a short cameo in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But don’t worry, this secret society of evil is sure to make itself known soon.
