A few more days to wait before the first episode of the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Little catch-up lesson before the big day.

The Lord of the Rings: already two trilogies

Written in 1937, for The Hobbit, and in the mid-1950s, for The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien’s novels have already inspired two trilogies. It was in 2001 that the world discovered The Fellowship of the Ring At the movie theater. The Two Towersthe following year then The king’s return in 2003 complete this first part of the saga. Peter Jackson embarks the public in Middle-earth and meets with phenomenal success. Served by an impeccable cast (Ian McKellen, Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, Cate Blanchett or LIv Tyler) and the incredible landscapes of New Zealand, The Lord of the Rings theatrical version grossed nearly $3 billion. You have to wait 10 years to find this universe fantasy on the big screen. The second trilogy (The Hobbit) was released between 2012 and 2014. The action ofAn Unexpected Journey, The desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the Five Armies takes place before the first saga. Peter Jackson is behind the camera again and part of the cast is back. Martin Freeman plays Bilbo, the central character of this prequel.

Lord of the Rings timeline

JRR Tolkien worked out an accurate timeline of Middle-earth. The saga of Hobbit takes place during the Third Age. It was in 2941 that Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin and his companions set out to find the treasure of Smaug. The action of the three films is concentrated on this same year. The trilogy of Lord of the Rings takes place between 3018 and 3019. It is not necessary to watch the two trilogies in order. Similarly, it is quite possible to discover the universe of JRR Tolkien with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power whose action will take place 7,000 years before The Hobbit.

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the event series

After buying the TV rights to famous JRR Tolkien novels in 2017, Amazon Prime Video (30-day free trial then €6.99/month) creates the back-to-school series event with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. See you on September 2 to discover the first 2 episodes of this new part of the saga. The images of the trailer suggest a breathtaking adventure. The young Galadriel and Elrond (two elves already present in the film saga) will be among the main characters of the series. The plot will tell us the story of the kingdom Númenor and the last alliance between men and elves. Viewers will also learn how the rings of power and the first steps of the evil Sauron were created. One episode will be unveiled each week until the grand finale on October 14. Amazon has already announced the production of 5 seasons at a cost of one billion.
