Qualified for the final of the European championships, the Blues must expect a big battle against Spain. Winning will not be an easy task, but according to Vincent Collet, his players can achieve it provided they respect a precise rule.
Here we are, the last hour of Eurobasket 2022 has come. It is France and Spain who will face each other, the two nations having each won their match in the previous round by beating Poland and Germany respectively. The Blues finally secured their first dominant victory in the semis, crushing their opponents by more than 40 points. A relief after having trembled against Turkey and Italy, in particular.
However, the Iberian selection will be of a completely different caliber than the Poles, both in terms of intrinsic quality and experience. Beat Sergio Scariolo’s men, who split a big statement on the EDF after qualifying, will therefore not be an easy task. Asked about the subject, Vincent Collet was still confident in the chances of the Habs to win. According to him, the key lies in a very simple condition:
Being themselves, the key for the Blues against Spain
It’s the final. From the start, we struggled to reach our best level. We are all trying together and we are exactly where we expected. But the road has been long. We saw in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals how much we had to fight to get there. Now we just need to be ourselves. The most important thing is the way we started the match (against Poland, editor’s note), our will and our determination. It made the difference.
It’s a fact, the French are far from having played their best tournament this year, showing a lot of weaknesses in the group stage before going a hair’s breadth from elimination against the Turks and the Squadra. However, Evan Fournier & co. showed great mental skills at the end of the match in particular, keeping a cool head in order to force fate. Their start to the match, pointed out at the start of the competition, also improved over the matches.
Against La Roja, it will be necessary to be concentrated and in its best light from the kick-off, the Spaniards not being known to give gifts to their opponents. Even less to the Blues, who have remained their rivals for quite a few years. The latter are however ready to fight an anthology, as Guerschon Yabusele said before the match. Excellent against the Poles, to the point where Collet compared him to an NBA legendReal Madrid inside want to take inspiration from semi-final performance to win gold:
We just played our basketball. We were very good in defense and we were aggressive. We have made life difficult for them. And we played well in attack, shared the ball. We played together and stuck together until the end of the game. We were really focused on getting this win.
According to Vincent Collet, the French team must above all remain faithful to its principles and to itself, during the Eurobasket final. If she succeeds, then the title will be within reach. It now remains to apply this recipe against Spain, its ancestral enemy.
