Are they there or are they doing? This is the most impertinent question that comes up when we talk about Pio D’Antini and Amedeo Greco, that is Pio and Amedeo, but after having seen them at work at the presentation of the new season of Emigratisthe program that earned them popular visibility and which returns with a fourth edition from Wednesday 28 September, no longer on Italia 1 but on Canale 5, we would like to say that, no, Pio and Amedeo are not there. They make us. Those who bring to the screen are not them, but two characters invented and built from scratch as well as the one who made the fortune of Checco Zalone before Zelig and then to the cinema, in iconic films like I fall from the clouds And Catinelle sun. We are talking about a character who always enjoys some success, perhaps because there is no better medicine than laughing at ourselves: let’s talk about the ignorant Italian, scrounger, inappropriate, the one we are all ashamed of but which, for some reason, amuses us. Perhaps because we are certain that we would never go down to that wild state of incivility and poor culture that has become the trademark of Pio and Amedeo, under the illusion of being better. Yet the two comedians have taught us that, despite this superficial rind, the italiot also has good qualities, like a good heart and a certain sensitivity – let’s think about that historic episode of Hyenas in which Pio and Amedeo witnessed the arrest of Vladimir Luxuria in Moscow, embracing her moved at the moment of his release – which today is anything but obvious.
Pio and Amedeo play a character, we said. A character who, in this fourth season of Emigratis, who, on the occasion of the move to Canale 5, has redone her trick by focusing on a more captivating editing and a more refined photograph, it explodes in all its boorishness and cialtroneria. From meeting Mike Tyson at his Miami home to chatting with a world champion like Neymar; from the spot revisited with Elisabetta Canalis on the slogan of “My Foggia” on a new visit to Gianluca Vacchi, Pio Amadeo, in Emigratis 4are the purest essence of their roles, namely two Italiots who lick the sole of Andrea Pirlo’s foot as a sign of reverence and insert Bebe Vio’s prosthesis in their nose not having a pack of handkerchiefs in their Gucci shoulder bags. They make someone laugh, someone else get hives. What is certain is that, beyond a certain indignation that on social media accuses Mediaset of giving visibility to a vulgarity and an incorrectness that should be banned, the numbers speak for themselves. First with Emigratis and then with Happy evening, a pleasant discovery spoiled, however, by the final monologue on words that must be emptied of their meaning, Pio and Amedeo have an audience on their side who can’t wait to follow their adventures from one end of the world to the other dressed up in bright glasses and astrakhan furs.
“Guests usually pay for themselves. We do not. Indeed, they are the ones who pay for us “, Pio and Amedeo joke, not straying so much from the truth. One of the strengths of Emigratis it is, in fact, the ability to reveal the truest soul of a VIP who, in a condition of discomfort and strong stress, can only resort to irony to come out clean and without being hurt. Many VIPs are in the game and, in fact, a Emigratis make a great impression, while many others do not understand the rules of the sketch and throw themselves into barbine figures that certainly do not do them honor. The main difference between what Pio and Amedeo and Checco Zalone do is, in fact, in the frame of the representation: if Zalone operates on the level of fiction – the stage and the cinema -, Pio and Amedeo operate on that of reality, since their characters interact with the outside world without filters, raising the doubt that they are so also in reality. Well, we feel like excluding it. In reality Pio and Amedeo are married, they have children – at one point they say that, after the airing of Emigratis, the next day they accompany their offspring to school with a balaclava to avoid being recognized – and a good dose of courage to test themselves up to this point. Courage that, if we want to be honest, Mediaset also has, which bets without hesitation on them knowing that it will almost certainly arouse the affection and laughter of an audience that never more than at this moment needs to unplug from daily tribulations and have some fun.
