Ligue 1: The probable composition of PSG for the meeting against Nantes

Paris Saint-Germain have looked unstoppable this season, with a draw at home to AS Monaco the only blemish on what could have been a perfect record.

Christophe Galtier’s side responded to the draw with a 3-0 victory over Toulouse in midweek. It could have been a bigger score if Maxime Dupe had created a great scoring chance. With another series of victories in preparation, the Parisians will be keen to secure two consecutive victories when they travel to the Beaujoire stadium on Saturday.

While PSG have historically held the edge over Nantes, Les Canaris have won two of three encounters since Antoine Kombouare took over as manager in 2021. Galtier will be keen to put a dent in that record and s will expect his far superior side to settle for nothing less than three points.

With 21 goals in just five games, PSG are by far the most prolific team in French football today. Nantes by comparison have only found the back of the net six times and sit tenth in the Ligue 1 table. Although the home side may not be firing all the cylinders, they have proven to be strong contenders difficult to pin down. This can be seen by the fact that they have only lost twice in their last 18 league games, a tally that matches PSG’s record in the same time frame.

While the Parisians fought their way through opposing defences, Nantes were largely content with draws. In fact, only Strasbourg have managed more dead ends than Nantes in the league this calendar year. In a way, the Saturday clash could end like an unstoppable object hitting a stationary body.

This is the second time the two teams have faced each other this season. They met in the French Super Cup earlier this month, a clash which PSG won 4-0. Unless Kombouaré has learned from the loss and has a plan in store, it could be the same this weekend.

Another day and potentially three more points in the bag for the defending champions. Monaco might have shaken off their winning run, but the game could have been different if Kylian Mbappé and his teammates had taken a chance. The fact that PSG, despite not being at their best, played Toulouse convincingly speaks volumes about their ability to get the job done.

Galtier will be without Presnel Kimpembe and Pablo Sarabia as they continue to recover from injury. He has an otherwise perfectly fit squad to choose from. The arrivals of Carlos Soler and Fabian Ruiz give PSG more options, but the pair remain unlikely to make their full debuts this weekend.

The PSG boss is unlikely to deviate from the 3-4-3 and its variants which have brought them so much success this season. Gianluigi Donnarumma could start in goal behind a three-man back of Danilo Pereira, Marquinhos and Sergio Ramos.

Achraf Hakimi rested this weekend and should resume his starting place at Nordi Mukiele. The same cannot be said for Nuno Mendes, who could make room for Juan Bernat on the left flank. Marco Verratti is almost unstoppable and should keep his place in the middle of the park alongside Vitinha. With a Champions League draw against Juventus to come, Galtier will want his side to settle the game early and then sound the changes.

This means that the electrifying front three of Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe will retain their places. The trio have been in scintillating form so far and are bonding well with each other. Nantes will struggle to pin them down unless they are at the top of their game, it could be another thrashing on the cards for the Canaries.

Probable composition (3-4-3): Donnarumma; Pereira, Marquinhos, Ramos; Bernat, Vitinha, Verratti, Hakimi; Messi, Neymar, Mbappe
